Lower House Speaker Ahmad Safadi Tuesday received the president and members of the Professional Associations Council, who registered their observations on the cybercrime bill.
The council members said they stood behind demands and memorandums on the draft law, which the Jordan Press Association and the Bar Association handed to the president of the Parliamentary Legal Committee.
Safadi said the legislature is open to all views regarding the draft legislation, stressing the leading role of professional associations in shaping public opinion and defending citizens’ rights.
He said the legislature and the associations stand together with one goal, achieving the national interest, stressing that the parliament stands by freedoms safeguarded by the constitution, but added “the duty today is to hold accountable all those who transgress the law and abuse, blackmail and fragment society and target citizens under the guise of freedom of expression”.
Thus, stiffening penalties against those who mean to offend through cyberspace has become a need and necessity, Safadi insisted.
President of the Council of Professional Associations Mohammad Ababneh said that his organization is keen not to prejudice freedom of opinion and expression and urged a reconsideration of the hefty fines stipulated by the bill.
