Abu dhabi: The International Judo Federation (IJF) has approved 14 weight categories for the 11th Abu Dhabi Grand Slam, held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in the Al Ain Region. The event is a significant qualifying tournament for the 2028 Olympics and is scheduled to take place from November 27 to 30 at Mubadala Arena.
According to Emirates News Agency, the organizing committee confirmed in a statement that the tournament will feature lightweight bouts for women under 48kg, 52kg, and 57kg, and for men under 60kg and 66kg. The competition will also include ‘light middleweight’ categories under 63kg and 70kg for women, and 73kg and 81kg for men. Additionally, the heavyweight category will comprise under and over 78kg for women, and under and over 90kg, and under and over 100kg for men.
The UAE Judo Federation expressed anticipation for the event, stating: “We look forward to welcoming national federations, distinguished delegates, and athletes from around the world, each adding to the vibrant and dynamic spirit of this competition.” They further added that the Grand Slam is set to be a celebration of skill, sportsmanship, and the true spirit of Judo, with expectations for remarkable performances and the forging of international friendships. The federation emphasized the unity and camaraderie that Judo represents, aiming to strengthen the global Judo community through this event.
