The Government of Japan has decided to allocate $2.5 million to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) between January and December 2023 for the “Protection Assistance to Refugees, Focusing on Community Mobilization, Women Empowerment and Basic Needs Assistance” project. According to the Japanese embassy in Amman, the project covers the basic needs of vulnerable Syrian refuges, who suffer from rising food and fuel prices and empowers the community’s engagement in the refugee response both in and out of camps by developing refugees’ leadership. The assistance by the Government of Japan benefits over 23,000 Syrian refugees in Jordan. Okuyama Jiro, Ambassador of Japan to Jordan, was briefed by Dominik Bartsch, Representative of the UNHCR Jordan Office, about the recent developments in the Syrian refugee assistance and visited a Syrian beneficiary family receiving UNHCR’s cash assistance, as well as the Princess Basma Center, which provides support for women’s empowerment and gender equality.
