Jordan Celebrates UNESCO Resolution on Old City of Jerusalem and Its Walls

AMMAN: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of Jordan has expressed its approval following the unanimous adoption of a resolution concerning the Old City of Jerusalem and its walls by the UNESCO Executive Board during its 220th session. According to Jordan News Agency, the resolution demands that Israel, recognized as the occupying power, halt all illegal and unilateral actions that aim to alter the historical and legal status quo of Jerusalem and its holy sites. The Ministry's Spokesperson, Sufyan Al-Qudah, highlighted that the resolution serves as a reaffirmation of Jordan's longstanding stance on the Old City of Jerusalem, encompassing both Islamic and Christian holy sites. It also aligns with previous resolutions by both the Executive Board and the World Heritage Committee concerning Jerusalem. The resolution's adoption is seen as a significant diplomatic win for Jordan, which plays a custodial role in safeguarding Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem. This development reinforces the international community's recognition of the city's historical and cultural significance and the need for its preservation amidst ongoing regional tensions.
