Jordan Condemns Israeli Calls for Settlements in Gaza as Violation of International Law

AMMAN: Jordan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates has issued a strong condemnation of recent calls by Israeli ministers and Knesset members to establish settlements in the Gaza Strip. The ministry described these calls as a direct violation of international and humanitarian law, urging for deterrent international sanctions against those responsible. According to Jordan News Agency, the ministry's spokesperson, Sufyan Al-Qudah, reiterated Jordan's firm opposition to these settlement initiatives, labeling them as a breach of United Nations Security Council resolutions, particularly Resolution 2334. This resolution explicitly condemns Israeli actions aimed at altering the demographic composition and status of Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem, and asserts the illegality of all Israeli settlement activities in these areas. Al-Qudah further referenced the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice, which underscores the illegality of Israeli occupation and settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territories. Al-Qudah criticized the calls for settlement in Gaza as part of a broader policy by the current Israeli government, which he accused of ongoing aggression against Gaza. This includes the blockade of the northern Gaza Strip, hindering the entry of essential supplies, and attempting to impose new realities through force. He emphasized that any resolution regarding Gaza should be integrated with the broader context of the occupied Palestinian territories. Jordan advocates for a comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue, rooted in the two-state solution, which includes ending the occupation and establishing an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital as per the 1967 borders. The ministry called on the international community, particularly the UN Security Council, to take action against Israel's ongoing aggression in Gaza, halt the humanitarian crisis, ensure civilian protection, and address illegal measures in the West Bank , providing necessary protection for the Palestinian population.
