Manar Abu Dhabi Illuminates City with Global Art and Cultural Exchange

Abu dhabi: Manar Abu Dhabi, the renowned public light art exhibition, is set to return for its second edition, bringing a fresh constellation of artworks to the emirate. This year’s theme, ‘The Light Compass’, showcases 23 site-specific light sculptures, projections, and immersive installations by 15 Emirati and international artists from 10 countries. The exhibition, organized by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), explores light as a navigational and poetic medium, bridging ancestral relationships with modern interpretations.

According to Emirates News Agency, the exhibition is curated by Khai Hori, with Alia Zaal Lootah, Munira Al Sayegh, and Mariam Alshehhi co-curating. Manar Abu Dhabi 2025 will take place across various sites, including Jubail Island, Souq Al Mina, and, for the first time, Al Ain. The exhibition trails through Al Qattara and Al Jimi Oases, celebrating Abu Dhabi’s unique ecosystems and cityscapes. The event also features a diverse public programme of talks, workshops, and performances, encouraging audiences to engage with the artworks and their underlying ideas.

Manar Abu Dhabi 2025 includes an engaging series of eight talks focusing on the intersections of art, technology, and public space. The programme kicks off with a conversation in Arabic on Public Art and the Al Ain Landscape, featuring notable artists and moderated by Alia Zaal Lootah. Discussions such as The Future of Art Without AI: Is It Possible? and Art, Tech, and Human Connection will delve into the evolving relationship between art and technology. Other sessions will explore contemporary artists’ experiments with natural environments, perception, and movement.

In collaboration with Abu Dhabi Art, the talks also highlight the physical presence of art in public spaces. Reimagining Space Through Sculpture and Designing Public Art for Presence and Space will examine how sculpture and design influence interactions within the UAE’s landscapes. These sessions aim to deepen engagement with contemporary practice and reflect on art’s impact across Abu Dhabi and beyond.

The exhibition also features a dynamic line-up of performances that celebrate creativity and cross-cultural dialogue. Acts like Bedouin Burger and Haepaary bring together traditional and modern musical influences, offering audiences a unique auditory experience. Additional performances by jazz pianist Tarek Yamani and the group Ars Nova Napoli further enrich the cultural exchange. Manar Abu Dhabi at Souq Al Mina will host vibrant weekend performances by various artists, enhancing the exhibition’s festive atmosphere.

As part of its educational commitment, Manar Abu Dhabi offers a programme for universities in Abu Dhabi, including keynote lectures by participating artists. These sessions aim to inspire students by exploring contemporary art’s intersection with technology and artificial intelligence. By fostering dialogue and engagement, the initiative seeks to cultivate a new generation of creatives and enhance understanding of digital media’s role in art.
