Mikati Directs Diplomatic Engagement Over Iranian Remarks on Lebanon’s Sovereignty

BEIRUT: Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati instructed Foreign Minister Abdullah Bou Habib to summon the Iranian charge d'affaires in Beirut to address comments by Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. Ghalibaf suggested Tehran's readiness to negotiate with France concerning the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701. According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Prime Minister Mikati asked the Foreign Minister to communicate Lebanon's stance to the Iranian diplomat. Mikati expressed his surprise at Ghalibaf's statements, considering them a "blatant interference in Lebanese affairs" and an attempt to impose "unacceptable tutelage" over Lebanon. Mikati reiterated that during recent visits by the Iranian Foreign Minister and the Speaker of the Iranian Shura Council, the Lebanese government underscored the importance of understanding Lebanon's current situation, amidst what he described as unprecedented Israeli aggression. Lebanon is collaborating with allies, includi ng France, to pressure Israel to halt its hostilities. "The responsibility for negotiating the implementation of Resolution 1701 lies with the Lebanese state," Mikati remarked. He emphasized the need for support of Lebanon's approach rather than attempts to impose new forms of tutelage, which he said are "rejected on both national and sovereign grounds."
