Naqoura:Lebanon Jean-Pierre Lacroix, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, has reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to maintaining peace and stability in Lebanon. He emphasized the importance of implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1701 as the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) plans to reduce its presence and conclude its mandate on December 31.

According to Emirates News Agency, Lacroix's statement followed his official visit to Lebanon, where he engaged in discussions with senior Lebanese officials, including President Joseph Aoun, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, Minister of Defence Michel Menassa, Minister of Foreign Affairs Youssef Rajji, and Lebanese Armed Forces Commander General Rodolphe Haykal.

These discussions centered on the prerequisites for implementing Resolution 1701, UNIFIL's responsibilities, and potential strategies for the next phase after the mission's departure. Lacroix also met with members of the diplomatic corps, troop-contributing countries, and the UN Country Team, expressing gratitude for their support of the mission and its peace-promoting efforts.

During his visit to UNIFIL's headquarters in Naqoura, Lacroix engaged with the mission's leadership and personnel, commending their dedication under challenging conditions. He acknowledged the expressed need for a third-party presence by the UN to prevent escalation between the Israeli army and the Lebanese Armed Forces.

Lacroix also voiced concerns regarding the future of the Blue Line and emphasized the need to support local communities in southern Lebanon post-UNIFIL's departure. Under Security Council Resolution 1701, UNIFIL continues to assist Lebanon and Israel in meeting their obligations by monitoring developments, reporting violations, engaging with parties to mitigate tensions, and facilitating humanitarian efforts.

This visit occurs as UNIFIL prepares to conclude its mandate at the end of 2026 amidst ongoing operational challenges faced by UN peacekeeping missions.
