BEIRUT: A delegation of opposition Members of Parliament, including Fouad Makhzoumi, Michel Moawad, Salim Sayegh, and Michel Douaihy, met with Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon, to emphasize the urgent need to halt the ongoing conflict in Lebanon and adhere to international resolutions aimed at restoring stability. According to National news agency - Lebanon, the delegation highlighted the critical necessity of enforcing United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, along with Resolutions 1559 and 1680, which are pivotal for maintaining peace and sovereignty in the region. These resolutions call for disarmament and the withdrawal of foreign forces, which the MPs see as essential steps towards ending the war. The MPs pressed for the implementation of the Taif Agreement, underscoring its role as the constitutional basis for these international resolutions. They argued that adherence to this agreement is vital for establishing a sovereign Lebanese state, free fro m external interference. Additionally, the opposition leaders called for the restoration of the Lebanese state's exclusive control over military and strategic decisions. They advocated for the deployment of the Lebanese army along the Blue Line and throughout the nation's borders to ensure security and uphold national sovereignty. The delegation also emphasized the urgent need to expedite the election of a new president, arguing that the resolution of Lebanon's political crisis should not be contingent on other issues. They stressed that electing a president is crucial for ending the war and achieving lasting peace, as it would pave the way for a legitimate government and effective institutions capable of restoring security and stability in the country.
