Qatar’s Cultural Landscape Thrives as Arabic Calligraphy Becomes Integral to Education and Architecture

Doha:Arabic calligraphy in Qatar has transcended traditional settings, becoming a significant aspect of the country's cultural, educational, and architectural identity. The integration of calligraphy into various public and private spheres is a result of coordinated efforts by numerous Qatari institutions.

According to Wam, several key institutions, including the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, Qatar Museums, Qatar Foundation, and the Cultural Village Foundation (Katara), have been pivotal in promoting Arabic calligraphy. These entities have incorporated calligraphy into public art, modern design, and educational programs, aiming to preserve and celebrate this element of national and cultural identity.

In public spaces, museums, and cultural centers, calligraphy is being actively integrated into the urban landscape through murals, sculptures, and architectural facades. Educational programs and workshops are also being conducted to cultivate emerging talent and ensure that calligraphic skills are passed down to future generations.

Qatar's commitment to Arabic calligraphy was further highlighted by its participation in the multinational effort to inscribe the art on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This effort underscores the importance of calligraphy as a shared cultural bond across the Arab world and emphasizes Qatar's role in promoting Islamic arts and the Arabic language globally.
