Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial to Honour Artists from UAE, Morocco, and Egypt

Sharjah: The Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial, in its twelfth edition set for next October, will honour three creative artists specializing in Arabic calligraphy. Under the theme 'Mizan' (Scale or Balance), the event will celebrate the achievements of Ali Al Hammadi from the UAE, Belaid Hamidi from Morocco, and Khalifa Al Shimi from Egypt.

According to Emirates News Agency, the honourees' exhibitions will open on the first day of the Biennial at 'Calligraphy Square.' These exhibitions will display selections from their artworks, highlighting their artistic journeys and contributions to the shaping of Arabic calligraphy. Mohammed Ibrahim Al Qasir, Director of the Department of Cultural Affairs at the Sharjah Department of Culture and Director of the Biennial, emphasized that the Biennial serves as a global cultural and artistic platform. It not only showcases Arabic calligraphy but also fosters dialogue among various artistic experiences, thereby solidifying its position on the calligraphy arts map.

Al Qasir further stated that the recognition of these artists is an acknowledgment of their artistic and intellectual contributions, whether through their personal experiences or through their research and documentation efforts. The upcoming edition of the Biennial will feature programmes and exhibitions that explore the connection between renewed crafts and visual arts. Additionally, solo exhibitions of the honoured artists will provide the public with opportunities to explore diverse artistic experiences that reflect the richness of Arabic calligraphy.
