Statement by the High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini on the formation of a new government in Lebanon

After months of intensive negotiations following the May elections observed by an EU election observation mission, it is very welcome news that Prime Minister-designate Hariri in close consultation with President Aoun was finally able to reach a consensus among all parties on the formation of a government. This is a positive step that is of crucial importance for Lebanon's stability.

The Lebanese people and the international community have high expectations for the new government, whose success will be determined by its capacity to address the challenges the country faces, particularly by adopting the necessary institutional, economic and social reforms.

The European Union continues to support Lebanon and most recently pledged its strong political and financial support at the three international conferences for Lebanon held in 2018 during Rome, Paris and Brussels. We will continue to work closely with the new government and ensure close coordination to implement the mutual commitments in the fundamental areas of security, economic recovery and addressing the impact of the Syrian conflict.
