Syria Requires $1 Trillion for Economic Rebuilding: Minister

Dubai: Dr. Mohammad Nidal Al-Shaar, the Syrian Minister of Economy and Industry, highlighted the need for at least $1 trillion to reconstruct Syria’s economy. He made these remarks during a conversation at the Arab Media Summit (AMS) 2025 in Dubai, where he praised the UAE’s development model, particularly Dubai’s focus on technology and innovation, as a source of inspiration for Syria.

According to Emirates News Agency, the minister emphasized the importance of economic cooperation between the UAE and Syria, rooted in the historical fraternal relations between the two nations. He described this collaboration as a vital force in rebuilding the Syrian economy, with aspirations to broaden the cooperation to include more diverse fields benefiting both countries.

Dr. Al-Shaar expressed skepticism about the World Bank’s $400 billion estimate for Syria’s reconstruction, asserting that a minimum of $1 trillion is necessary to rebuild the nation. He shared a vision of a stronger and more stable Syria as international sanctions are lifted.

The session at AMS was attended by notable figures, including H.H. Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The minister conveyed a sense of international consensus on the need for Syria’s stability, emphasizing the urgency due to the population’s inability to endure further chaos.

Dr. Al-Shaar expressed optimism about Syria’s future, mentioning potential foreign investments and the reopening of embassies, which would enhance security and attract investors. He also discussed ongoing efforts to create an investment roadmap for tourism and industry, highlighting opportunities in Syria’s ports and railway sector.

The session was also attended by Her Excellency Mona Ghanem Al Marri, underlining the importance of international collaboration in Syria’s path to recovery.
