UAE Date Palms Successfully Cultivated in China’s Inland Regions

Wenchang:The date palm harvest season has concluded in Wenchang City, Hainan Province, as well as in Yuanjiang County, Yunnan Province, and Panzhihua City, Sichuan Province, marking a significant milestone for UAE date palms, which have produced fruit in notable quantities for the first time in China's inland regions. According to Emirates News Agency, the spread of UAE date palm varieties across China is progressing, with successful cultivation in multiple locations. In Wenchang, eight varieties of date palms bore fruit again, while in Yuanjiang, 52 palms, and in Panzhihua, 125 palms, produced fruit for the first time. The initiative began in 2019 with the UAE's donation of 100,000 date palm seedlings to China to support agricultural development. The first batch of 1,500 seedlings was delivered in 2021, achieving a high survival rate of around 93 percent. Subsequently, a second batch of 23,500 seedlings was sent, aiming to enhance agricultural cooperation, share scientific and technical expertise, and cont ribute to food security and economic growth in both nations. The report notes that UAE date palms are gradually expanding from Wenchang to other suitable areas in Hainan and inland regions like Yunnan and Sichuan, known for their dry-hot valleys. In Yuanjiang, a two-hectare experimental base was set up in 2024 with nine date palm varieties, leading to the first fruit harvest this year. Meanwhile, in Panzhihua, a China-UAE experimental base covering over four hectares was established in 2025, and 125 palms bore fruit just one year later.
