New york: Khaled Khiari, Assistant Secretary-General for the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific, emphasized the crucial role of the enduring partnership between the United Nations and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in fostering international peace and security. Khiari highlighted this collaboration’s importance during his address to the Security Council on the topic of cooperation between the United Nations and regional and sub-regional organizations.
According to Emirates News Agency, Khiari noted that in an era marked by increasing geopolitical complexities, the collaboration with regional entities like the OIC is essential. He pointed out that such cooperation aligns with Chapter VIII of the UN Charter and is a high priority for the Secretary-General as part of the implementation of the Pact for the Future.
In his remarks, Khiari mentioned that the United Nations and the OIC have historically pursued shared goals, particularly concerning a lasting resolution to the Palestinian question. He highlighted the recent joint Conference on the Question of Jerusalem, organized by the United Nations and the OIC in Dakar on July 9. Additionally, he praised the OIC and the League of Arab States for their endorsement of the Recovery and Reconstruction Plan for Gaza, which represents a collective effort toward a just solution based on relevant UN resolutions.
Khiari further mentioned the significance of the upcoming Ministerial Meeting on the two-State solution, co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia. This meeting aims to underscore international consensus and reaffirm the principles supporting the two-State solution.
He also acknowledged the OIC’s role in addressing global challenges like Islamophobia. The United Nations values the OIC’s leadership in confronting the rise of religious intolerance. The recent appointment of Miguel Moratinos as Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia by the UN Secretary-General signifies the organization’s commitment to intensifying efforts on this issue in collaboration with the OIC and other partners.
