Brussels: The United Nations Security Council: on Monday voted to extend the mandate of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) for one year, until 17th June 2027. The decision underscores the international community's continued commitment to supporting Afghanistan amidst ongoing challenges.
According to Emirates News Agency, the Council also requested the Secretary-General to conduct a strategic review of UNAMA by 31st March 2027. This review aims to improve the mission's effectiveness, coherence, and coordination. Additionally, it seeks to eliminate duplication and address obstacles that hinder the delivery of its mandate.
The Security Council has further requested the Secretary-General to provide quarterly reports on the situation in Afghanistan. These reports are expected to cover the implementation of UNAMA's mandate, including developments at the subnational level.
