Shoukry discusses climate change with EU’s Timmermans

Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, the President Designate of the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27), has received a phone call from European Commission Executive Vice President and European Commissioner for the European Green Deal Frans Timmermans.

During the call, Shoukry expressed appreciation for the extended cooperation between Egypt and the European Union in all fields, noting that Cairo is looking forward to maintaining such cooperation at various levels, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Hafez said on Wednesday.

Egypt intends to build on what has been achieved during the latest session of the UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow (COP26) with a view to strengthening global efforts to confront climate change, especially with regard to limiting the negative impact of climate change, adapting to it, and providing financing to address the phenomenon, the foreign minister said.

Shoukry added that Egypt is developing an ambitious agenda for the next session of the climate change conference that includes upgrading the countries’ nationally determined contributions (NCDs) as regards reducing emissions and financing adaptation to the negative impacts of climate change.

Egypt is set to host the COP27 in the Red Sea resort city of Sharm el Sheikh in November.
