Gamea: Gov’t interested in boosting gold jewelry industry

Trade and Industry Minister Nivine Gamea stressed the government’s interest in promoting the gold jewelry industry to be a make Egypt a key hub for exporting gold jewelry and other gold products to Arab and African countries.

She made the remarks on Saturday during the inauguration of the 2022 Nebu Expo for Gold and Jewelry which is held on February 19-21 with the participation of about 30 major gold companies.

Supply and Internal Trade Minister Ali el Moselhi attended the inauguration ceremony of the event – which is organized by the Federation of Egyptian Chambers of Commerce – alongside Ministers Hala el Saeed of Planning and Economic Development and Khaled Anani of Tourism and Antiquities.

The fair is meant to activate and promote this important sector and increase its competitiveness in the local and global markets.

She said that Egypt was among the pioneering countries whose gold exports surpassed dlrs 2.9 billion before the coronavirus pandemic.

She added that Egypt established the first gold refinery at a total cost of dlrs 100 million.

According to her, gold was one of the most important items on Egypt’s list of exports in 2021. Its exports registered dlrs 1.108 billion, she noted.
