Sources have said that the two Cypriots were on board the train and are now listed as missing by the Greek authorities. The head-on collision of the two trains in Greece took place on Tuesday evening resulting in the death of dozens of people.

Replying to a question on the matter at the Presidential Palace following the swearing-in ceremony of the new Cabinet, new Foreign Affairs Minister Constantinos Kombos said that the crisis management team had already been activated at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, that coordinated contact was taking place both with the embassy and the consulate in Greece a well as the Greek police “but right now we cannot say anything else officially.”

“Once the matter has cleared up officially by the Greek authorities and we are informed, the information will certainly be given,” Kombos noted.

Speaking during the handover ceremony at the Ministry a little later, outgoing Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides conveyed his sympathies to the Greek people over the tragic accident, noting that whether Cypriots were among those missing or the victims would “clear up within the day.”

On his part, Kombos also expressed his deep sorrow over the tragic accident and conveyed his condolences to the families of the victims, as well as the country’s “support and solidarity” to the people of Greece.
