BasraThe Director of the Office of the High Committee for Human Rights in Basra, Mahdi Al-Tamimi, discussed with the Basra Police Commander, Major General Qassem Rashid Zuwaid, important issues related to the promotion and protection of human rights in Basra.

Al-Tamimi told the National Iraqi News Agency (NINA) that he discussed with the police chief and his deputy important issues, including the follow-up of the investigation of the assault on an educational cadre during the demonstrations of last February 28.

He added that the freedom and support of the media and the protection of journalists were also discussed, and a decision was taken regarding the press equipment of the journalist Ihab Al-Maliki in the light of the letter of the Office of the High Committee for Human Rights in Basra, and the repair and delivery of the equipment urgently.

He pointed out that it was agreed to hold a meeting soon with the media and human rights defenders to discuss freedom of expression and access to information in joint numbers.

The police chief explained that the investigation will be highly professional, and the procedures will be carried out in accordance with the law, and the case will be closely followed up.

He added that it was agreed to nominate no less than 300 officers for training carried out by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in cooperation with the Office of the Minister of Interior and the Basra Police Command to receive high training on human rights principles and the use of investigation mechanisms, detention, the Convention against Torture, and the rules for dealing with demonstrators within the 2023 plan.
