Türkiye’s retail sales grew 5.4% from the previous month in January, the strongest pace in five months, according to official data released on Monday.

The figure followed a monthly hike of 3.7% in December 2022, according to the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat).

Food, drinks and tobacco sales surged 7.4% month-on-month in January, while non-food sales – excluding automotive fuel – increased 5.6%.

Automotive fuel sales rose 2.1% from January 2022.

Among non-food items, electronic goods and furniture saw the largest increase of 10.6%, while textiles, clothing and footwear fell 1.2% from the previous month.

On an annual basis, Türkiye’s retail sales jumped 33.9% in January, the largest hike seen in the last 21 months.

Non-food sales – except automotive fuel – soared 42.4% year-on-year in January.

Sales of food, drinks and tobacco grew 24.4% in January compared to last year, while automotive fuel sales increased 23.6%.
