German labor unions organized on Monday a nationwide strike that brought much of the nation’s transports to a standstill.

The unions, Verdi and EVG, called in a statement upon workers and employees of the railway sector, airports and ports to observe the strike to protest low payments.

Efforts to persuade employers raise the salaries by 10.5 percent have failed, the unions declared.

Meanwhile, Martin Seiler, head of human resources at state-owned rail company Deutsche Bahn (DB), has described the protest as unnecessary, urged the unions’ leaders to resume talks. The strike has caused harm to millions of people, he added. (end) anj.rk
