Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Friday called the situation in Palestine dire as a large number of civilians were killed or injured and the humanitarian situation deteriorated.In a joint press conference with High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell after high-level strategic dialogue between China and Europe on Friday, Wang Yi said that the Chinese side condemns the targeting of civilians in all its forms, and rejects all actions that are in violation of international law.He called for a ceasefire as soon as possible, commitment to international humanitarian law, making every effort to ensure the safety of civilians and opening a humanitarian relief corridor to avoid a serious humanitarian disaster.The Chinese minister urged all concerned nations to exercise restraint and resort to objectivity and justice and push to defuse tension to avoid a larger shock to regional and international security. He said the United Nations should play the required
role in solving the Palestinian issue and the Security Council to take the key responsibility to push for international accord and take tangible measures as soon as possible.He said Beijing is in contact with the parties concerned and it will engage in urgent Security Council debate, adding that his country supports an urgent appeal by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for the protection of civilians.Wang Yi also said Beijing will provide urgent humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip and the Palestinian National Authority through United Nations channels.
