Health Ministry and EU Launch Campaign to Combat Smoking in Jordan

Amman: The Ministry of Health, with support from the European Union, initiated a new anti-smoking awareness campaign on Monday, focusing on the enforcement of Public Health Law No. 47 of 2008, which bans smoking in public places. The campaign aims to promote a smoke-free environment and encourage a healthy lifestyle among Jordanians. According to Jordan News Agency, the initiative, sponsored by the Minister of Health, Firas Hawari, and supported by the European Union through the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation in Jordan (AECID), is designed to foster behavioral and social changes. It encourages the public to avoid smoking and protect themselves from passive smoking. Secretary General for Primary Health Care and Epidemiology, Raed Shboul, emphasized the campaign's alignment with the national strategy to combat tobacco use in all its forms. Spanish Ambassador to Amman, Miguel de Lucas, highlighted the need for strong political resolve and widespread cooperation to tackle tobacco use, which he described as entrenched within the social, cultural, and economic layers of society. Lucas sees the campaign as a crucial part of a broader strategy that encompasses legislation, law enforcement, awareness, information dissemination, and healthcare services. Mary Hofers, Team Leader for Governance and Human Development at the European Union Delegation to Jordan, expressed the EU's commitment to this health initiative. She stated that the EU and its partners urge Jordanian citizens to embrace healthier lifestyles beginning with quitting smoking. Ghaith Owais, Director of the Health Awareness and Media Directorate at the Ministry of Health, presented the campaign's goals and strategies. These include community activities and awareness festivals in the governorates of Ajloun, Tafilah, and Mafraq. The campaign, in collaboration with local health directorates and community health committees, aims to engage directly with the community to promote health consciousness.
