Access to information is non-negotiable human right: NCHR

The National Council for Human Rights (NCHR) is always working for enforcing human rights, said Moushira Khattab, president of the NCHR, on Wednesday.

Addressing journalists during a hearing session of the NCHR’s civil and human rights committee, Khattab stressed that the right of access to information has been recognized as a fundamental non-negotiable human right.

Titled: “Freedom of the press.. freedom of opinion, expression, and circulation of information,” the session saw the participation council members Ismail Abdel Rahman, George Isaac, and Ghada Hammam.

Khattab also stressed that everyone has the right to get information from various sources, noting that the council convenes regularly to promote and enhance human rights.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the NCHR’s civil and human rights committee Mohamed Anwar El Sadat said the session is held as part of the committee’s action plan, following a previous meeting with representatives of human rights organizations and political parties.

He added that the committee plans to hold a hearing session involving all stakeholders in the media and press industry, including the Journalists Syndicate, the State Information Service, and the Supreme Council for Media Regulation, and the Higher Press Council.

The committee will also hold another session with independent trade unions in the near future, Sadat said, noting that the views debated during these sessions would be crystallized and presented to the bodies concerned to create adequate solutions that contribute to the consolidating of human rights.
