Finance Minister Mohamed Maait stressed Thursday 14/7/2022 that Egypt will host a meeting of African ministers in September to speak with one voice about the climate change summit.
On September 7-9, Egypt is playing host to a meeting of the African ministers of finance, economy, development and environment in cooperation with the UN Economic Commission for Africa as part of ongoing preparations for the climate change gathering and Finance Day, said Maait in a statement Thursday.
He said Egypt seeks to become a voice for Africa at the climate change summit and adopts possible mechanisms and methods to provide necessary financing to implement ambitious international plans to combat climate changes, particularly in the shadow of consecutive economic crises starting from Covid-19 pandemic until the military operation in Europe, which doubled the financing gap.
The African ministerial meeting aims to crystalize a unified African vision on financing and climate change issues, the Egyptian minister went on to say.
“We will invite regional and international partners to attend the discussions and contribute to adopting an African position to combat climate changes,” he said.
The meeting will probe African finance needs to positively address environmental and economic repercussions of climate changes and is set to take up mechanisms for providing soft financing chances to support green economy transition policies and programs to achieve sustainable growth and stimulate the private sector to participate in eco-friendly projects, added Maait.
He pointed out that the meeting offers an important opportunity for contributing to promoting the role of the African continent in facing climate changes, in which African countries will spotlight painstaking efforts they exert in climate action, which requires international support including financing.
