Emir of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, welcomed the foreign ministers of the Arab countries participating in the consultative meeting held in Doha, including Lebanon’s Deputy Prime Minister, caretaker Minister of Defense and Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Zeina Akar, with whom he tackled the overall situation in the Arab countries, and topics of common interest.
Minister Akar then participated in the consultative meeting of Arab foreign ministers, which was held in Doha under the chairmanship of the State of Qatar, and touched on ways to enhance Arab action, in addition to discussing issues of common interest, foremost of which was the Palestinian cause and the recent Israeli attacks.
The minister stressed that “Lebanon’s position is against the policy of settlement and occupation, and in total solidarity with the Palestinian people and their legitimate rights and the right of return.”
The Lebanese file was not absent from the meeting’s discussions, as Minister Akar called on the Arab countries to “help Lebanon out of its crises,” noting that they had never failed to support it, and stressing that “the challenges that Lebanon faces today constitute an unprecedented threat to its existence and entity.” She warned against collapse and its consequences at all levels, “especially in light of the economic crisis, the coronavirus epidemic, and the presence of displaced Syrians on Lebanese soil.”
Akar also underlined “Lebanon’s keenness on [maintaining] the best relations with the brotherly Arab countries.”
Minister Akar also participated in the meeting of the Arab League Council at the ministerial level, in its extraordinary session on the developments of the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam file, at the request of the countries of Egypt and Sudan. In this context, she stressed that “Lebanon’s position is supportive of what was included in the statement issued by the meeting and of Arab positions related to this sensitive issue.”
Minister Akar also held a series of ministerial meetings at her residence on the sidelines of the consultative meeting of Arab foreign ministers.
