AL AIN, Al Ain Zoo has celebrated its various achievements in the field of wildlife preservation and nature conservation on World Wildlife Day, marked annually on 3rd March.
The Zoo is currently one of the leading institutions in breeding endangered species, most notably the Arabian Oryx. It conducted a study on migratory birds, researched types of wild butterflies, and monitored the types of insects that have made the Zoo its safe habitat.
The Zoo also participated in developing strategies for conserving the African Dama Gazelle (2019-2028) to reduce the threats of its extinction in cooperation with related entities and organisations on local, regional, and global levels.
In vegetation, the Zoo has succeeded in propagating one of the endangered local plants, the dwarf plant or dwarf palm, and seeks to do the same for other local plants to preserve them from extinction. The Zoo houses a seed bank containing approximately 50 types of seeds, most of which were collected from plants in the garden and its own nursery.
The Zoo’s mission is not limited to wildlife research alone as it also aims to raise community awareness by organising various activities such as camps, events, and parties to familiarise the local and international community with the importance of protecting endangered animals and plants to maintain the biodiversity of the planet.
