Al-Khazen Discusses Israeli Actions and Patriarch’s Visit to Rome in OTV Interview

BEIRUT: In an interview with OTV Channel, MP Farid Haykal al-Khazen addressed the ongoing regional tensions, particularly criticizing Israel for its military actions, which he described as criminal and brutal, violating Lebanon's sovereignty. Al-Khazen emphasized that the situation represents a new kind of war, as international norms appear to be eroding under the influence of global powers, notably the United States. According to National News Agency-Lebanon, al-Khazen highlighted the capabilities of Hezbollah, suggesting that the group remains a significant threat to Israel, demonstrated by recent incidents targeting the residence of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He outlined two potential scenarios going forward: the imposition of a ceasefire, possibly under American pressure, which he expressed skepticism about due to the nearing end of the current U.S. administration's term, and increased military operations by Hezbollah within Israel, which he suggested might eventually lead to calm and a c easefire. Al-Khazen also touched upon the significance of Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Bechara Boutros al-Rahi's visit to Rome. He viewed this visit as a crucial opportunity to convey the challenges faced by Lebanon to Pope Francis and seek his support in two key areas: facilitating a ceasefire and aiding in the election of a new Lebanese president. Al-Khazen proposed that such developments could pave the way for resolving the ongoing crisis. The MP underscored the importance of electing a new president, which he believed would serve as a gateway to a lasting solution through negotiations led by the newly elected president of the republic. He called for a political summit to follow the recent spiritual summit, aimed at uniting political leaders to safeguard Lebanon's unity during these challenging times. Emphasizing the historical role of the Maronite Patriarchate in promoting national unity, al-Khazen warned of Israel's alleged attempts to incite discord within Lebanon, deeming it a more significant threat than military aggression. Furthermore, he revealed Patriarch al-Rahi's intention to convene another spiritual summit in Bkirki, aiming to address the issue of displaced individuals and foster solidarity between them and the host communities.
