On January 25, 2024, Japanese Ambassador to Lebanon, Magoshi Masayuki, attended the hand-over ceremony of a solar power system for the water pumping facility in Baalechmay, which was supported by the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Security Projects (GGP) through the Environment Academy of the American University of Beirut (AUB).

The southern area of Baalechmay has faced a severe shortage of public water supply, as the Municipality of Baalechmayhas faced difficulties in operating the existing well pumping facility due to the current energy and economic crises. To this end, Japan decided to support the Municipality of Baalechmay through the Environment Academy of AUB to install a solar power system to operate the well pumping facility. This assistance will enable more than 4,000 residents to have access to safe water at more affordable price.

In his speech, Ambassador MAGOSHI highlighted the significance of addressing water scarcity in Baalechmay, emphasizing the importance of sustainable solutions to ensur
e continuous access to water for residents, and reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting Lebanon’s development through initiatives that prioritize the needs of vulnerable communities. In return, Mr. Mohammed Makkawi, the Governor of Mount Lebanon, highlighted the project’s significance in advancing renewable energy solutions and fostering community collaboration, and Ms. Asmaa Al Zein, a AUB Representative, expressed her gratitude to Japan for its support. Lastly, Mr. Adham El Danaf, the head of the Baalechmay Municipality, thanked Japan and underscored the collaborative effort and skill development for the youth fostered by the project as the youth plays the vital role for the country’s growth.
