Anadolu captured footage of artillery and mortar batteries deployed in Zaporizhzhia, a region in southeastern Ukraine where intense fighting with Russian forces continues.

Sounds of gunshots and explosions echoed in the background, although they were not as intense as the clashes in Russian-controlled Donetsk region.

The footage captured shots fired by 2S1 Gvozdika, a Soviet self-propelled howitzer, deployed on the frontline.

The Commander of the 2S1 Gvozdika Howitzer Battery, codenamed Matros, told Anadolu about the recent developments on the front.

Stating that they frequently target enemy position, Matros said: “We are firing quite intensely. We continue our war activities to support our infantry.”

“Artillery systems are used extensively. This war is the war of the artillery. There are artillery fires everywhere. It cannot be done without the artillery system,” he added.

US-delivered M120 mortar in use by Ukraine’s army

The US-made M120 Mortar battery, installed at another point on the Zaporizhzhia front, is also on alert.

The Commander of the M120 Mortar Battalion, codenamed Pegas, stated that the weapon was sent from the US to Ukraine as part of weapons aid.

“We are the first team in the Ukrainian army to use this weapon. We used this weapon in the direction of Bakhmut,” he said, adding that now they were directing it at the Zaporozhia front.

Russia’s war on Ukraine has entered its second year with western countries firmly backing Kyiv.
