There was a rapid increase in the registration of new appeals before the Administrative Court of International Protection, during the period from 2020 to 2022, a press release by the Law office of the Cyprus Republic says.

The total number of new appeals registered in 2022 amounted to approximately 9,180 cases, more than six times the number of appeals in 2020, which was approximately 1,464 cases.

The figures are included in the “Annual Statistical Analysis of the Appeals Subsector of the International Protection Administrative Court and Appeals of Aliens Administrative Court, for 2022”.

The Law Office’s press release says that the jurisdiction of the Appeals Subsector is the handling of all appeals registered against the Republic by asylum seekers and foreigners.

The assistance of the law office is essential as it represents, the Ministry of the Interior, the Asylum Service and the Department of Population and Immigration, before the Courts.

The Annual Statistical Analysis shows, according to the announcement, the volume of work and the contribution of the law office. It is reported that in 2022, the law office completed 8,788 cases in the Administrative Court of International Protection. Of the 4,279 decisions issued, 99.53% were in favour of the Republic. The remaining 4,509 cases were withdrawn and/or dismissed.

Compared to 2020, decisions in favour of the Republic increased by 432.38%. The highest percentage of foreigners who appealed to the Administrative Court of International Protection in 2022 come from Pakistan (25.99%), countries on the African continent (22.14%), Bangladesh (19.79%) and India ( 14.80%).

For 2021, the countries with the highest percentage of foreigners applying to the Administrative Court were from Bangladesh (23.93%), India (21.56%), Pakistan (16.68%) and the African continent (16.22%).

In 2022, the Law office handled approximately 600 cases of foreign citizens at the Administrative Court. It also handled 129 court orders of privilege (Habeas corpus) in the Supreme Court and approximately 100 appeals against decisions of the Administrative Court.
