The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, and the Commissioner-General of UNRWA, Philippe Lazzarini, discussed in Cairo Tuesday the conditions of Palestinian refugees and the financial challenges facing the UN agency.
Aboul Gheit noted the “importance” of bridging the funding gap in UNRWA’s budget of $70 million, according to his spokesman, Jamal Rushdi.
He expressed full support for Lazzarini’s work to overcome financial challenges and to ensure that UNRWA continues to provide its services to 5.5 million Palestinian refugees.
He added that UNRWA’s work is a “safety valve for regional stability and that it is important for donor countries not to renege on their commitments to the agency.”
