Cairo: The Arab Observatory for Human Rights of the Arab Parliament Saturday lauded a report by the United Nations rights chief calling for holding Israel accountable for its violations of the international law in the occupied Palestinian lands.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk told the Human Rights Council on Friday that “the current spate of deadly violence is distancing the prospect of a two-State solution to end the Israel-Palestine conflict, as the occupation is eating away at both societies”.

He said the death toll from violence sharply rose in the first weeks of the year and in February, urging decision-makers and people on all sides to “step back from the precipice to which increasing extremism and violence have led”.

In a statement, the observatory said that the international community, particularly the UN Security Council and the High Contracting Parties to the Fourth Geneva Convention, “should live up to their obligations and use all means and measures provided by the international law to hold Israel, the occupying power, accountable”.

It expressed its concern over Israeli violations against the Palestinians, which have escalated in recent months “in a way that threatens the situation to explode, undermines security and stability and impedes any serious attempts to achieve a just peace.
