VIENNA: Austria's Minister of Defence, Klaudia Tanner, has issued a cautionary statement regarding the potential withdrawal or failure to fulfil the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) stationed in southern Lebanon. Tanner emphasized that such actions could undermine the credibility of the United Nations, particularly during this critical period. According to Emirates News Agency, the Austrian minister underscored the determination of European countries that contribute troops to the UNIFIL mission to remain unified in their commitment to the UN mission, despite increasing attacks on UN peacekeepers. Tanner's comments followed her participation in a conference attended by representatives from the 16 European countries involved in the UNIFIL mission. During the conference, Tanner urged all parties involved in the conflict in Lebanon to cease fighting and refrain from targeting UN forces. She highlighted the essential role of the UNIFIL mission as a neutral observer tasked with doc umenting the situation in the operational area. Tanner's remarks reflect ongoing concerns about the safety and efficacy of international peacekeeping efforts in volatile regions. The UNIFIL mission, established in 1978, has faced various challenges over the years, but its presence is deemed crucial for maintaining stability in southern Lebanon. The recent attacks on peacekeepers have raised alarms about the potential implications for regional security should UNIFIL forces be withdrawn or their mandate weakened.
