The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan declared as persona non grata four employees of the Iranian Embassy in Baku for practicing “activities incompatible with their diplomatic status.” “Seyyed Abbas Mousavi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the Republic of Azerbaijan, was summoned to the Ministry.

“During the meeting, strong dissatisfaction was expressed to the Iranian Ambassador due to the recent provocative actions demonstrated by his country in relation to Azerbaijan,” the Ministry said in a press release on Thursday.

The Iranian ambassador was informed that the four employees were declared persona non grata due to activities incompatible with their diplomatic status and the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

“Those persons were demanded to leave the territory of Azerbaijan within 48 hours,” the statement added.

Tensions between the two neighbors went high in January 2023 which the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Tehran came under an armed attack that claimed the life of a security guard. The attack prompted the Azerbaijani authorities to pull back their diplomatic mission from Tehran.
