Caretaker Minister of Industry George Boushkian and MP Bilal Al-Hashemi criticized the European decision in favor of keeping the displaced Syrians in Lebanon, describing it as ‘very dangerous,’ as it contributes to changing the demographics of the Syrians and Lebanese alike.
In a joint statement issued Sunday morning, the two officials considered, “it is known that the survival of Syrians in Lebanon means keeping them in refugee camps amidst social and health suffering, and the presence of children in an endemic environment.”
They affirmed “their support for the return of the Syrian refugee to his homeland,” considering that it is not logical for a person to accept living in hotbeds of suffering in refugee camps while owning land in his own country.
Finally, they called on European officials and others to “create a safe zone in preparation for the return of Syrian refugees to their country, similar to the plan that was drawn up to solve the Iraqi refugee crisis and return them to their areas at that time.”
