CBJ Launches New Financial Consumer Protection Guidelines for Banks

Amman: The Central Bank of Jordan (CBJ) has introduced a new set of regulations titled "Financial Consumer Protection Instructions for the Banking Sector" No. (14/2024), which will become mandatory for all banks in the Kingdom 90 days after its publication in the Official Gazette. According to Jordan News Agency, this regulatory framework aims to enhance the stability of the financial system, support sustainable development, and promote financial inclusion. The CBJ's initiative is a response to the evolving needs of the banking sector and is intended to establish a more robust consumer protection environment. The new instructions delineate a clear legislative framework that governs the interactions between banks and their customers, setting forth the responsibilities and obligations that banks must fulfill. These include adhering to internationally recognized principles of financial consumer protection such as fair treatment of customers, transparency and disclosure, and the safeguarding of customer data an d privacy. Key features of the guidelines also include responsible pricing, proper design and delivery of banking services, responsible lending practices, and measures to prevent excessive indebtedness. Furthermore, the instructions emphasize the importance of enhancing consumer awareness, education, and financial capabilities. The regulations address specific issues such as credit cards and dormant accounts, and also set maximum limits on fees that banks can charge for various customer services. The CBJ has made these instructions available on its website, providing easy access for financial institutions, stakeholders, and consumers to review and prepare for the upcoming changes.
