ABU DHABI: A Swiss author has revealed that his debut children’s book, which tells the story of a camel overcoming his negative self-image, was inspired by his own struggles during childhood.

‘The Spotty Ghaidaan’, written by Kurt Blum and illustrated by Emirati artist Mohammed Al Rais, was launched at the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair (ADIBF) on Monday.

The book, a heart-warming tale that teaches children about uniqueness, triumph, and environmental awareness, has quickly captivated the attention of young readers with its unique narrative and vibrant depiction of Emirati culture.

Blum, the author, told the Emirates News Agency (WAM) that the protagonist of the book, a camel named Ghaidaan, was created from a blend of personal and observed experiences.

Two key experiences from the author’s life have inspired the book.

Firstly, as a child, Blum had many spots like birthmarks on his skin, which made him embarrassed when he went swimming or played sports. However, he found solace in his talent for playi
ng musical instruments, which made him proud and helped him overcome his insecurities, just like the Spotty Ghaidaan.

Secondly, Blum’s numerous travels to Africa, where he observed and interacted with camels, greatly influenced the book. In the Sahel region of Burkina Faso, he even bought and sold camels, witnessing how they were cared for by families and used for their own businesses.

When he reached the UAE in 2007, he started visiting camel beauty contests in Liwa and camel races in Dubai. Entranced by the animals, he spent hours observing their behaviour and interactions, eventually incorporating these experiences into his storytelling.

‘I used my own experiences to shape Ghaidaan’s character,’ he said. ‘I hope this story helps children learn that what makes them different can also be the source of their greatest strengths,’ said Blum.

After writing the book in 2008, Blum did not pursue publication due to concerns about finances and lack of experience in the publishing industry. It was only after atte
nding a webinar with Rob Moore in 2020 that he decided to move forward with the book.

The illustrations, crafted by Mohammed Al Rais, play a crucial role in bringing the story to life. Al Rais aimed to reflect the rich heritage and traditions of the UAE, capturing everything from the local architecture to the methods of food storage and travel, all of which he believes will educate and intrigue the book’s young audience.

‘This book is not just about the past. It is a bridge to the present, helping children understand and appreciate a world that might be new to them,” Al Rais told WAM.

‘The Spotty Ghaidaan’ is more than just a story about overcoming adversity; it includes an environmental message about recycling and reusability, particularly highlighted through Ghaidaan’s use of aluminium cans for his acts.

The book has received support from several prestigious bodies, including the UAE Ministry of Culture through the National Grant for Culture and Creativity Programme and the Embassy of Switzerland in the
UAE.

With its delightful story, educational message, and evocative illustrations, ‘The Spotty Ghaidaan’ is set to capture the hearts of young readers and inspire them to embrace their individuality and make a positive impact on the world.
