BEIJING: Dr. Chen Zhenlin, Administrator of the China Meteorological Administration (CMA), has reiterated China’s commitment to enhancing international cooperation and engaging in global climate governance.

He made this comment on the occasion of World Meteorological Day (WMD), according to Economic Daily.

Dr. Chen highlighted China’s positive progress in addressing climate change as the largest developing country. The CMA has facilitated Chinese experts to participate in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the United Nations body for assessing the science related to climate change. This CMA initiative helped provide services to 129 countries through China’s FengYun satellites, demonstrating the country’s efforts to implement the UN Early Warnings for All Initiative, an effort to ensure everyone on Earth is protected from hazardous weather, water, or climate events.

Looking ahead, Dr. Chen said that the CMA will stand at the frontline of climate action, shoulder the responsibility of scie
ntific innovation, improve public services, consolidate climate change research, promote the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI), and strengthen climate risk management and early warning systems.

Addressing climate change requires strong collective efforts, and the CMA has pledged to join hands with relevant parties to work towards a clean and beautiful world, he added.

Climate change exacerbates challenges related to food security, population displacement, and impacts on vulnerable populations. Heatwaves, floods, droughts, wildfires, and rapidly intensifying tropical cyclones have caused significant economic losses and disrupted everyday life for millions.

The theme for the 64th World Meteorological Day (WMD) “At the Frontline of Climate Action,” emphasised the urgent need for collaborative efforts to combat the severe threats posed by global warming.

The World Meteorological Organisation’s (WMO) State of the Global Climate 2023 report revealed record rise in greenhouse gas concentrations, surfac
e temperatures, ocean heat and acidification, sea level rise, shrinking Antarctic sea ice extent, and glacier retreat. Issuing a “red alert” on the precarious state of the global climate, WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo joined United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres in an urgent call for decisive action to halt the vicious cycle of global warming.
