GUANGZHOU: China’s inaugural ultra-deepwater drilling vessel embarked on its maiden voyage on Monday, signifying a significant milestone in the nation’s deep-sea exploration and marine technological capabilities, as reported by China Daily.

The 33,000-ton Meng Xiang can drill up to 11,000 meters underwater and withstand typhoon-force winds, said Li Jinfa, Director of the China Geological Survey. Over 150 institutions participated in building the ship, which began construction in 2021.

The advanced vessel will aid in exploring and harnessing marine energy resources and establish China as a leader in deep-sea tech innovation, Li said.

Equipped with world-class labs and testing facilities, the Meng Xiang can undertake interdisciplinary ocean research. Its automated systems also enable sophisticated monitoring and data collection during drilling.

Zhang Shaokang, Vice-Governor of Guangdong, said the vessel is a crucial tool for deep-sea exploration and an important engine for building a global hub for marine t
echnology and industrial innovation.

Sheng Jigang, Deputy GM of the state shipbuilder CSSC, said the vessel exemplifies CSSC’s capabilities and commitment to serving national development goals.

The Meng Xiang’s advanced features and maiden voyage mark a new chapter in China’s deep-sea capabilities. Its future discoveries and contributions will further cement China’s status as an ocean research leader.
