We will be in close cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture in an effort to improve, assist and strengthen efforts to address various challenges, Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Stella Kyriakides said. Kyriakides met on Friday morning with new Minister Petros Xenophontos in the framework of a visit to the island. They discussed issues of her portfolio and more specifically the EU ”Farm to Fork” strategy and its implementation in Cyprus through a series of actions aimed at getting to more sustainable food systems, until 2030. They also discussed the rational use of plant protection products and animal welfare while they reviewed the measures taken in Cyprus against the spread of harmful organisms for plants. In statements to the press the Minister said the meeting was very constructive, adding that the close cooperation will be strengthened for the benefit of society. He said that they discussed the ”Farm to Fork” Strategy, issues related to the use of pesticides and antibiotics, animal welfare and issues related to plant health. He said that he is certain the Commissioner will stand by their side and will support Cyprus’ efforts to further deepen its relations with the EU. On her part, Commissioner Kyriakides wished the new Minister of Agriculture every success in the difficult task he has undertaken saying that today they had a first exchange of views on important issues of her portfolio namely the ”Farm to Fork” Strategy, the reduction of the use of pesticides, antimicrobial resistance and animal welfare. She said they will stay in close cooperation in an effort to improve, assist and strengthen the efforts of the Ministry in addressing various challenges that exist, as in other member states. Kyriakides also noted that we must never forget that the issues of human health are interrelated with all issues concerning the environment, plant health, animal health and welfare.
