Sameh Shoukry, the Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs and the President of the UN Climate Change Conference 2022 (COP27), congratulated the UAE on launching the “Road to COP28” event, which commenced today at Expo City Dubai. In a statement to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), Shoukry expressed his belief that the event, which was launched under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, would provide additional impetus to the global climate action movement. Shoukry expressed his particular satisfaction with the UAE’s emphasis on empowering young people in the field of climate action and enhancing their role in addressing this critical issue. He noted that during the Egyptian COP presidency, efforts were made to involve young people by appointing the first-ever COP Youth Envoy, establishing the first dedicated Children and Youth pavilion, and organising several other youth-related activities. The Egyptian foreign minister also reiterated Egypt’s support for the UAE’s efforts to assume this global responsibility, particularly given the increasing severity of the climate crisis. He also welcomed the close coordination and dialogue between himself and the COP28 UAE President-Designate, Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, and his team to ensure the best possible outcomes for COP28, building on the achievements of COP27, which took place in Sharm El Sheikh.
