Culture Minister Nivene el Kilany and Director-General of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) Salim M. AlMalik on Friday 10/03/2023 handed over the awards of the “Turathy” photography competition.

This comes within the closing ceremony of the activities of the “Cairo, the 2022 capital of Islamic culture”.

The “Turathy Photography Competition” intends to encourage photographers in the Islamic world to creatively monitor and document heritage buildings and areas in Cairo and other cities in the ICESCO Member States.

The ceremony was attended by a number of ambassadors, officials and representatives of Arab and Islamic states.

During the ceremony, the minister said that selecting Cairo as the capital of Islamic culture in 2022 is due to its unique position as a culture meeting point throughout successive eras and as an important center for culture and creativity.

She added Cairo is considered as a culture meeting point between the East and the West.

The activities of the program, which lasted for a whole year, included 149 different cultural and artistic activities.

Dubbed “The City of a Thousand Minarets”, Cairo has been announced the Capital of Culture in the Islamic World for 2022 by the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization due to its hosting of numerous monuments.
