Manama, Cybersecurity is among the major topics being discussed by the participants in the Council of Presidents of the United Nations General Assembly (CPUNGA) in Bahrain.

The CPUNGA meeting, held for the first time outside the United States, will provide an opportunity to the participants to deliberate on the global issues, conflicts and challenges being faced by the world community.

The meeting was opened by Shaikha Haya Rashid Al Khalifa, the President of the 61st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and over two days delegates will take up major issues among them the challenges posed by Cybersecurity.

“We are holding the meeting outside New York for the first time since the CPUNGA was formed about 25 years ago,” Han Seung-Soo, the Chairperson of the CPUNGA, on the sidelines of the CPUNGA, told Bahrain News Agency.

“Over the two and half decades, we haven’t had any activity outside the United States as we always meet in the United Nations, New York. This is first meeting outside the United States and that is why this is a very historical moment for all of us.”

He extended gratitude to the Government of Bahrain for hosting this meeting and praised Shaikha Haya bin Rashid Al Khalifa for her leadership as the President of the 64th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

“From this, Bahrain meeting will be opening up a window of opportunity for the CPUNGA and we hope that these meetings will rotate at various places around the world in future,” he said.

“I heard a lot about Bahrain for many years and being a Korean we owe a lot to Bahrain and our nationals play a significant role in the social and economic development of this great nation.”

Han served as the president of the 56th U.N. General Assembly in 2001.
