Deadly fighting shrouded the Sudanese’ Eid al-Fitr joy Thursday despite the military’s agreement to a three-day truce.
Hoping for “rebels” to abide by the ceasefire, the Sudanese Armed Forces, in a statement, said the opposing Rapid Support Forces must halt all military mobilization.
The US Embassy in Sudan; on its Twitter feed, said it continues to closely monitor the situation in Khartoum and surrounding areas, where there is ongoing fighting, gunfire, and security forces’ activity, calling for all parties to honor the truce and allow in humanitarian aid.
“We desperately need a humanitarian pause so that wounded and sick civilians can reach hospitals,” the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said.
The fighting that erupted on April 15 between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) in Khartoum has so far killed about 331 people and injured more than 3,200 others, with gunfire and explosions still heard across the capital city.
As a result of the unrest, thousands of civilians have fled Khartoum and foreign nations are trying to evacuate their citizens amid fierce fighting.
