Egypt population growth rate declined by 46% from 2017 to 2023


CAIRO: Population growth rate in Egypt declined by 46 percent from 2017 to 2023, Minister of Planning and Economic Development Hala El-Said stated on Thursday.

In 2023, the population growth rate in Egypt declined by 1.4 percent, the lowest in the last 50 years, the minister added, citing a report issued by the National Project for Egyptian Family Development (NPEFD).

According to Ahram Online, the birth rate in Egypt reached two million in 2023, a decline of 15 percent compared to 2018 and 7 percent compared to 2022.

As of 1st January, the population stood at 105.8 million, up from 104.4 million in 2022 and 102.8 million in 2021, according to the population clock of the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).

The fertility rate in Egypt fell from 3.5 children per woman in 2014 to 2.85 in 2021, according to the results of the last family health survey.

The survey also showed an increase in the contraceptive prevalence rate to 66.4 percent in 2021, compared to 58.5 percent in 2014.
