Egypt remains committed to the multilateral trading system as well as activating its role in confronting the current global challenges, affirmed Trade and Industry Minister Nevine Gamea.

Gamea, meanwhile, pointed out to the crucial role played by the World Trade Organization (WTO) in further enhancing global trade, developing value chains and linking developing countries into global economy.

The minister further underlined the need of reaching to outcomes which could contribute to confronting global food crisis and promoting food security and facilitating the transfer of vaccines and medical supplies, according to a statement issued by the Trade and Industry Ministry.

The minister’s remarks were made during a speech she delivered while chairing the Egyptian delegation participating in the WTO’s 12th Ministerial Conference (MC12), which is currently being held in Geneva.

During the conference, which will run until June 15, Gamea voiced appreciation for the efforts made by the WTO and the member states over the past years.

The minister added that it is essential that African countries adopt a unified position that reflects their common interests within the WTO.

Regarding the fisheries subsidies negotiations, Gamea voiced confidence that the state members would be able to reach an agreement which supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The minister further underlined the importance of achieving more progress regarding negotiations on issues listed on the Doha Development Agenda.

Furthermore, she affirmed Egypt’s commitment to the multilateral trading system and its willingness to work with all member states to make the 12th ministerial conference a success in a way that helps advance economic development in Africa.

Concluding her speech, the minister extended thanks to the Swiss government for hosting the conference and for its good organization.

She also extended appreciation for Kazakhstan for chairing the ministerial conference.
