Eight African Nations Advance Circular Economy Initiatives

Abu dhabi: Eight more African nations have committed to developing new circular economy roadmaps under the guidance of the Africa Circular Economy Facility, a multi-donor trust fund managed by the African Development Bank Group. This initiative seeks to bolster the integration of circularity into public policy as a means to drive economic transformation.

According to Emirates News Agency, the second phase of the National Roadmaps for the Circular Economy (NCER) programme will see Angola, Liberia, Madagascar, and Senegal crafting their individual roadmaps. These nations will focus on identifying priority sectors, coordinating institutional efforts, and customizing strategic guidelines to fit their local economic frameworks.

In parallel, Benin, Chad, Ethiopia, and Mauritius are moving into the implementation phase. This stage involves converting government frameworks into actionable policies, funded programmes, and sustainable institutional capabilities.

Anthony Nyong, Director of the Climate Change and Green Growth Department at the African Development Bank Group, highlighted the significance of this initiative. He noted that the continent faces an annual development financing gap exceeding $400 billion, and the circular economy roadmaps could play a crucial role in fortifying domestic productive capacities and transforming priorities into viable investment opportunities.
