Environment Minister: We’re cooperating with petroleum sector to protect natural resources

Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad stressed her ministry is closely cooperating with the petroleum sector to protect natural resources and encourage the private sector to balance between protection of natural resources and expansion of energy and fuel industries.

She made the remarks on Saturday during a meeting with Lorenzo Simonelli, the Chairman of Baker Hughes, on means of enhancing bilateral cooperation in the field of eco-friendly fuel and energy technology.

The fruitful collaboration between the petroleum and environmental sectors resulted in adopting environmental measures in 11 sites in the Gulf of Suez region, she said, referring to ongoing efforts to narrow the gap between the public and private sectors in developing eco-friendly technology.

Egypt is deeply interested in addressing global warming, she said. Although the petroleum sector is responsible only for 3% of Egypt’s total carbon emissions, the Environment Ministry is keen on addressing the emissions of this sector, she added.

For his part, Simonelli said the company seeks to continually develop eco-friendly technology.

He stressed the company’s preparedness to cooperate with Egypt at the national level in eco-friendly technology and the use of hydrogen as a new source of energy.

The two sides agreed at the end of the meeting to enhance cooperation in fuel technology and low-carbon and green energy.
